Guided Tour to discover the hidden remnants of war in Lapland

Duration: 3 hours / Difficulty: Easy

During the second world war German soldiers retreated out of Finland through Lapland and the remains are still visible in the land. In Tankavaara they build the Schutzwall defence post that is still visible today.

Guided 3 hour tour to the history takes you to see the dugouts, the trenches, an old cannon and viewpoints where the soldiers stayed and planned how to build the defence post. As our guide tells you about the history we walk in the forest areas and climb to the Small Tankavaara Hill to observe the surroundings.

The tour takes around three hours and you should prepare with outdoor clothing and hiking shoes. We walk in forest, stony paths and climb a small hill. Take a water bottle and a camera with you as well! The tour includes guiding and a small snack with juice.

We start and end the tour in Tankavaara Wild Center that has toilets and a parking area nearby. After the tour you can visit the Goldmuseum to learn about the gold history in Lapland or try guided gold panning yourself! Restaurant Old Gold Prospector serves within walking distance and is open daily. It is also possible to drive there by car.
